Updates to be added:  According to an SMMT report on the EU market in 2005 (see P32) new registrations of cars weighed an average of 1400 kg in 2005.  So this may be a good approximation to the fleet average in 2010.  Based on figures published in 2002  British men weigh 79.75 kilos and women 66.7 kilos. Taking a mean of these figures and dividing into 1400 we obtain a ratio of 19.12.  Therefore, after allowing for extra items which are often carried around in cars the 20:1 car to driver weight ratio is probably a good approximation.
